Together At Every Step: BFC vs SWFC Weston Park Takeover Day
Oakwell Stadium turns purple this Tuesday as Barnsley Football Club goes head-to-head with Sheffield Wednesday FC in partnership with Weston Park Cancer Charity.
The next ‘Together at Every Step’ Weston Park Takeover Day is here – when the Reds host the Owls for a rematch on Tuesday 21st March.
We’re delighted to announce that the players will be warming up in Weston Park Cancer Charity’s iconic purple t-shirt with their mascots, whilst Weston Park volunteers take over the stands to raise money for people living with cancer and families in South Yorkshire.
The Together at Every Step Partnership has already raised an amazing £8,282 towards our £15,000 goal this season, we hope this next game will help push us to that final target. The money raised will help the Charity to support the one in two people diagnosed with cancer in our region.
This particular game is extra-special as Barnsley FC supporter and cancer survivor Richard Jones, takes the stage as the guest of honour. Richard was treated at Weston Park Hospital after being diagnosed with head and neck cancer last year, after recently being given the all-clear; we hope that an afternoon with his favourite team will bring further positivity and light to his week – whilst ticking off a bucket list activity!
Andrew Clark, Head of Marketing and Communications at Barnsley FC, said:
“It’s a proud moment for us, and football in general, to be collaborating with such an important cause.
With all the hard work and commitment the charity put in daily, the very least Barnsley FC can do is play the Together at Every Step game and raise awareness.
It’s our honour to welcome Richard Jones to Oakwell Stadium, we hope he has an unforgettable day and will do all we can to make him feel at home.”
Since the initiative began in 2021, the two local rivals (along with Sheffield United FC) have hit major milestones for us at Weston Park – With the first two Weston Park Takeover Day matches, and similar collaborative events with BFC, SUFC and SWFC, raising over £20,000!
Darren Hayes, Head of Fundraising at Weston Park Cancer Charity said:
“We’re so thankful to Barnsley FC to be hosting the Weston Park Takeover Day and to all the teams for taking part in the Together at every Step Partnership, It’s because of partnerships like this that we can make such a difference to local people and communities.
They help us to enhance treatment experiences for people currently going through cancer – including funding for hospital ward improvements, entertainment and support for patients and so much more.”
If you’re heading to Oakwell Stadium on Tuesday 21st March to watch Barnsley FC challenge Sheffield Wednesday FC, keep your eyes peeled for Weston Park Cancer Charities volunteers around the ground with their fundraising buckets and activities.
Plus, stay tuned at the end of the match when we’ll announce the total money raised throughout the game and if we’ve managed to reach our £15,000 goal!
