Past pupils and staff urged to share their memories of Maltby Grammar School
As work continues on the redevelopment of the former Maltby Grammar School building, Maltby Learning Trust are asking for past pupils and staff to share their memories of their time at the school.
The historic Yorkshire grammar school educated children in the area from 1932 until 1967, when it merged with the local secondary modern and became a comprehensive.
David Sutton, chief executive officer of Maltby Learning Trust, said: “It is fantastic to see the work taking place on the old Maltby Grammar School and we can’t wait to be opening the repurposed building as a community resource that accommodates local services, supports wellbeing, employment and enterprise, and provides substantial learning opportunities for the Maltby community.
“What we are keen to do is to preserve some of the history of the building through people’s memories, stories, photographs and artifacts from the grammar school.
“We are asking for any past pupils and staff to share their memories with us and we’ll be looking for a way to showcase these for generations to come.”
The £5.9m project, part of a winning bid secured by Rotherham Council through the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, will extend the Trust’s Post 16 specialist facilities, and create an incubator space for training, apprenticeships, and start up support in the leisure and hospitality sectors.
The Levelling Up Fund will provide £4.5m towards the project which will see the building including the landmark clocktower, transformed into a three-story community space to include bookable workspaces, serviced hot-desking, seminar rooms, a community coffee shop, and an apprenticeship/skills development centre. The Trust is set to launch a ‘buy-a-brick’ fundraising scheme to secure the additional funding required for the project.
The project is part of a £20 million pound investment secured by Rotherham Council to help improve the leisure economy and skills in Rotherham.
Other attractions also benefiting from the Levelling Up funding include Wentworth Woodhouse, Thrybergh Country Park, Rother Valley Country Park, Magna and Skills Street at Gulliver’s Valley.
