Transport Forum

The group will address key transport issues across Barnsley and Rotherham, and the wider reason.

The working group consists of those members whose expertise, experience and interest in transport matters (as operators or users of transport services) will allow the Chamber to make informed and constructive comment on those issues which we feel are in our members’ interests.

The Chamber’s key partners within the local authorities and regional government are also closely involved and play an important role in keeping the group informed on local and regional transport policy. The group is also a contributor to national policy via established consultation mechanisms and specialists groups.

The Barnsley & Rotherham Transport Forum meets regularly to debate and discuss the current transport issues in the region. Representatives from the public and private sector meet with SYPTE officials to establish priorities going forward and how with our partners we can deliver more effective and sustainable transport facilities and services in both towns. The Government have announced the £500m Growing Places Fund which is being led by the Department for Transport and the Department for Local Government, and has three overriding objectives:

  • To generate economic activity in the short term by addressing immediate infrastructure and site constraints and promote the delivery of jobs and housing.
  • To allow local enterprise partnerships to prioritise the infrastructure they need, empowering them to deliver their economic strategies
  • To establish sustainable revolving funds so that funding can be reinvested to unlock further development, and leverage private investment.

Tell us what you think...

The Chamber’s Transport Forum is looking for some “quick win” issues to take up with Barnsley & Rotherham Councils.

These are issues that would take little or no money to implement but would make a big difference to road users.

Examples might be traffic lights giving priority to the wrong roads, vehicles turning right and blocking traffic that could be solved with no right turn signs, poorly laid out junctions etc

Please could you spare a minute of your time to think of just one thing in either Barnsley or Rotherham that you notice on your daily travels that could easily be solved (you can of course send more than one if you have multiple issues).
